9 Essential Moving Supplies You Need to Pack

Apr 26, 2018

Moving is definitely a daunting task for most people. There is always so much to consider during a move. Organizing belongings and packing them in a logical way is a huge help to eliminate some of the stresses associated with a big move. Efficient packing is certainly one of the most important parts of the moving process. Proper packing tools and supplies can ensure that belongings survive the move intact and without becoming damaged. Fortunately, moving doesn't have to be complicated with the right supplies. This is why it is important to plan ahead and use these 9 essential moving supplies to make packing a breeze:

1. Boxes

Moving is almost impossible without something to pack the belongings into. Boxes make the best moving containers. Cardboard boxes are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased from a hardware store. New boxes are a better choice due to the fact that they're stiff and sturdier than recycled boxes. New boxes also stack better without collapsing under the weight of being stacked on. Recycled boxes from a grocery store can work as well. The only downside is the durability isn't as good as a new box. If you are a consistent online shopper, then you may have a plethora of boxes available to you as well.

2. Packing Tape

Packing tape, specifically made for packing, is a necessity when moving. Boxes need to be assembled using a strong tape so the bottom of the box doesn't fall through. Tops of boxes need to be taped shut as well, so that other boxes or items can be stacked on top of them. Plus, taping boxes keeps critters from taking up residence if the boxes are housed in a storage unit for a period of time.

3. Bubble Wrap

Breakable items can't just be loosely thrown into boxes without some type of cushion. Bubble wrap is perfect for wrapping breakable items like dishes and mirrors. Rolls of bubble wrap are inexpensive and can be purchased at a hardware store. Without bubble wrap, fragile items can shift inside the packing container and break or become damaged.

4. Labeling Supplies

The key to being organized while packing is to label what is in each of the boxes. This makes unpacking and finding items a lot easier after the move. There are many different ways to label boxes. A permanent marker will do the trick. Writing the contents on each side of the box makes it easier to find the correct box no matter which way it is facing. Sticky labels can also be used to indicate what items are in boxes.

5. Plastic Tubs

Plastic tubs are a great way to pack with ease. Most plastic tubs are made with airtight lids and handles for easy carrying. These are great for packing items like clothing and linens. Unless the tote has wheels, it is inadvisable to pack heavy items because lifting will become a burden. Another great thing about plastic tubs is that they're also stackable and can be placed on top of each other.

6. Newspaper

Saving up old newspapers can be a big advantage for an upcoming move. Newspapers can be used to wrap dishes and breakable items before packing them into boxes. Large newspapers can also be bought at a gas station in bulk, depending on the amount of breakables to be wrapped.

7. Trash Bags

A cheap and inexpensive way to pack clothing and linens is by using household trash bags. Clothes can be folded up and stuffed into the trash bag and tied off and then used to as a cushion between furniture items on the moving truck. Another way trash bags can be used to pack clothing is by tearing a hole in the bottom and sticking the hangers through like plastic dry cleaning bag.

8. Suitcases

Any luggage sitting around the house can definitely make packing a breeze. Almost anything can be stuffed into a suitcase, even heavier objects like shoes, because most have wheels for easy transport. Toiletries and electronics can even be packed inside a suitcase with ease.

9. Laundry Baskets

Almost every home has a couple of laundry baskets being used to store dirty laundry. Why not utilize them to pack for a move? They have handles to make carrying easy and holes to make the contents visible so no labels are needed.
